Warner Breaks Australian Record

Brutal: Warner smashed the highest List A score by an Australian

David Warner smashed a brutal 197 as New South Wales chased down 321 with just three balls to spare against Victoria in the Ryobi Cup.

Australia’s Ashes hopeful Warner clobbered 20 fours and ten sixes in making the highest ever limited overs score by an Australian, overtaking Jimmy Maher’s 187 made in 2004. With just three required for both his double-century and the victory for his side, Warner holed out to deep square leg off the bowling of John Hastings and it took a further five deliveries for New South Wales to finish off the chase.

Despite Warner’s knock, however, it was a poor day for Australia’s Test hopefuls and a better one for those on the fringes. Uncapped Dan Christian shared an opening stand of 202 with discarded Test batsman Rob Quiney, who fell eleven short of a century when he miscued to mid off. Christian’s century came from 71 balls and ended at 117, to another Test discard Doug Bollinger, who will be disappointed with his figures of one for 73.

Ashes spinner Nathan Lyon endured a day to forget, going wicketless and at over six-and-a-half an over in his nine overs, whilst fringe player Josh Hazelwood was more effective in taking three wickets. Joining Christian and Quiney in the Victorian batting line up, Matthew Wade made only 16 and David Hussey just nine. There was, however, a pleasing cameo from Cameron White, who made an aggressive 42.

Victoria would have being picturing themselves in Sunday’s final having posted 321, but they reckoned without the immense striking power of Warner and the able support of Peter Nevill. The openers shared 149 before Nevill fell just four short of a half-century to Fawad Ahmed. Ahmed performed somewhat better than his Test rival Lyon, but was still treated with disdain by Warner who dispatched him over the ropes.

Peter Siddle, a certainty to begin the Ashes series, was the most economical bowler of the entire match but was unlucky to finish wicketless, and received little support from his colleagues. Warner took a particular liking to Siddle’s opening partner William Sheridan, whose seven overs went for 73. Steve Smith was unlucky in pushing his first ball back to the ball but Nic Maddinson is a future international in the making and he picked up from Smith’s dismissal by adding 69 with Warner.

New South Wales will meet Queensland in Sunday’s final.
